Palestinian prisoners detained and arrested by the Israeli military occupation are referred to as Captives or Asra أسرى. Using puppetry and audience participation, this documentary theatre production explores the experiences of Asra and the importance of Thaqafah ثقافة or Culture, such as literature, poetry, and songs, as practices of resistance and liberation.

So often puppetry is thought of as a children’s art form and it is rare to have shows in Aotearoa for adult audiences that address serious topics. We are very excited to welcome Asra to our festival, fitting so well into our theme of ‘Puppets for Peace’.

About the artist

We are Sumud Ensemble. We make theatre in solidarity with Palestinians and for liberation of all oppressed peoples everywhere. We are enthusiastic learners when it comes to Puppetry! Some of our rōpū are mimes and have experience making puppets, others are voice actors and musicians.
