Absolute favourites of our 2024 festival, Toro Pikopiko Puppets are returning with this interactive pūrākau for the whole whānau to enjoy. Using traditional kare-tao puppets and their iconic ‘flatsie’ mountain puppets, children participate in narrated retellings of legendary Ngāti Tūwharetoa stories such as the Battle of the Mountains and how Volcanic Fire came to Aotearoa — musical stories with an ultimately peaceful outcome! We are very honoured to have Jeffrey and Whaitaima join us again from Taupō as our Festival Kaumātua.
About the artist
Toro Pikopiko Puppets are Whaitaima Te Whare (Ngāti Tūwharetoa), and Jeffrey Addison (Kāi Tahu, Te Ātiawa). Together they have been keeping the kare-tao tradition alive by making and using kare-tao puppets for live theatrical productions, children’s television drama, stop-motion animation, and touring their musical puppet shows around Aotearoa since 1995. Jeffrey has Te Ātiawa whakapapa to Wellington and together they will help us hold the manawhenua of the festival space.
